Date -Photo #9-32A-A3 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The John Jenkins Homestead possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with West Barnstable's historical development, andwith the several illustrious persons who have resided here: John Jenkins, Oakes Shaw, Lemuel Shaw and Elizabeth Jenkins.
It also has considerable importance as a 17th century dwelling, expanded and altered over time to reflect the tastes and lifestyles of its residents. The Jenkins house thus meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Although remodelling and renovations by previous owners occurred during its three hundred year history, this home has retained its charm and beauty. It contains some of the construction materials when built in the late 1600s. The date 1685 is inscribed in a fireplace brick. Its present style is late Georgian or the early Federal Period. The gable roof is shallow pitched with a large off-centered chimney through the peak in line with the off-centered front door. The front eave overhangs the facade.
The house and windows have moderate width trim. The door has wide vertical trim with a plain architrave over the entrance. The window panes are moderate size 6/6 light. There is an ell with two chimneys on the south gable and featuring an attached garage and an ell on the west gable end. The north facade has an extension with a lean-to roof starting at the second story roof eave level to a one story height. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The families who owned the property or lived here made significant contributions to the village, town, state and beyond state bounds in settlement, agriculture, conservation, political, social and religious activities by their dedication, initiative and perserverance for the common good.
John Jenkins, who came to West Barnstable in 1652, built on the property and developed the area for farming and raising livestock. It became known as "The O1d Parsonage" becaase of Pastor Oakes Shaw who owned the property from 1763-1807. He was a dedicated, capable and the highly esteemed pastor of the West Parish Church for 47 years from 1760- 1807. It was said at his funeral that, "He preached more sermons thanany minister in New England." Lemuel Shaw was the second son of Oakes Shaw and his second wife, Susanna Hayward Shaw. Lemuel Shaw, 1781-1861 was born here and becamea Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts from 1830-1860, "and in that capacity achieved solid fame extending far beyond his native state." A plaque in his honor is located on the property. Shaw Lane, an ancient way, was named after the family.

The home is located on the north side of Church Street which is part of the "New Road" laid out in 1793 to the West Parish Meetinghouse from the intersection of Main and Plum Streets. The road was widened in 1802.
