Date 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Jenkins/Whelden Farmstead possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.
It is significant for its asscoiations with the development of West BArnstable's village life and agricultural activities, for its asso- ciations with two respected local families, and especially as a well-preserved farmstead, a rare type in Barnstable. The farmstead thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Jenkins Farmstead is one of only two well-preserved farms in the entire town, this despite its location immediately north of the mid-Cape Highway (Rte. 6). The farm is characterized by Shallow Pond to the east, and open fields lined by stone walls to the west; the land across Pine Street to the north is wooded.
In the center is the main house of c1840, a former early 18th century house now used as a tool shed, two barns, and two smaller sheds. The main house, constructed by Eben Whelden, is a three-bay, 1 and 1/2 story cottage that retains the traditional Federal period form despite its late date. Typically, the entry is headed by a transom, and the simply framed windows contain 6/6 sash. The entire structure is shingle clad and extended by several rear ells. the former house is believed to have been constructed by Thomas Jenkins (1666-1745) on Church St. in West Barnstable. Shortly after his death, the eastern half was moved by his son Ebenezer (as directed by his will) to its present site. It is a two bay, gable roof shingle structure with a stove chimney through the north gable. Irim 1s simple and vindows contain 9/6 sash.
HISTORICAL SICNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This farmstead was first developed by Ebenezer Jenkins c1745, after he moved part of his deceased father's house from Church Street. The Jenkins family, who were early settlers in the area, developed the property for farming and raising of livestock. They were active in village religious, social and political affairs, contributing to its growth and stablility. The Whelden family continued the agricultural and social traditions established by the Jenkins family, and are noted for developing several of the nearby ponds for cultivation of cranberries in the later 19th century.
