Anderson Candace Jenkins Barnstable Historical Comm. 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Harlow Homestead possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workman- ship, feeling and association. It is significant for its continous associations with members of the locally prominent Harlow family, and as a preserved example of Greek Revival/Italianate style architecture. It thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Harlow House of c1878, combines elements of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. It is a 1 and 1/2 story, L-plan, gable roofed structure, extended by a rear wing.
It is sheathed with narrow vertical boards (said to be slats from a bed factory) and trimmed with corner pilasters and a wide entablature. Windows have bracketed hoods and contain 6/6 sash. The entry is within an enclosed porch located at the angle of the L. A barn is located to the rear of the house, completing the picture of a well preserved later 19th century residence. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. ,Elijah Harlow purchased the land upon which this house now stands in 1875 from Elizabeth Crocker, Ellen Gage and Susan Crocker for $100.00. The house was probably constructed shortly thereafter; it appears on the 1880 County Atlas under the name E. Harlow. The 'Harlow family had resided in the Santuit/Cotuit area throughout the 19th century.
'fter Elijah's death in 1898, the house passed to his widow, Elizabeth A. Harlow. In 901, Elizabeth conveyed the homestead to her widowed daughter-in-law, Agnes J. Harlow. gnes' two children, Elizabeth M. and Abbott L. Harlow, inherited the family homestead fter their mother's death in 1912. bbott L. Harlow died in 1975 leaving all property to his sister, Elizabeth M., who died in 1981. John S. Harlow, Jr., a second cousin to Elizabeth M. and Abbott, inher- ited the property from Elizabeth M.
