Date 1986 Photo #41-15A-A26 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Fuller House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.
It is significant for its associations with West Barstable's agricultural development, and as a well-preserved Federal period farmstead consisting of main house and barn. The property thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Fuller House is a three bay, 1 1/2 story cottage extended by a side wing. It is shingle clad and enclosed by a gable roof with offset chimney. The entry, which is offset to the opposite side, is framed by pilasters and headed by a transom in typical Federal period fashion. Windows are simply framed and contain 6/6 sash. An English style barn sits northeast of the house, and a low, unmortared stone wall sets the property off from Parker Road.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Fuller family owned the land encompassing this property in the late 18th century when they began to develop it for farming and raising of livestock. At that time, the property included fresh marsh and meadow land as well as salt marsh, all of which provided important food sources for livestock. The house and barn are located on the northwest side of Parker Road which was proposed in 1793 and voted to be widened in 1802, thesame period during which they were constructed. Named after the Parker family and first called the "New Road," Parker Road ran from the intersection of County Road and Plum Streets directly to the West Parish Meetinghouse (Area WBB).
