clapboard Outbuildings none Major Alterations (with dates) entry removal of one story porch Condition excellent Moved Acreage Setting no Date 1.00 residential 22/105 Recorded by Candace Jenkins Organization Barnstable Historical Comm. Date 1986 VATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Josiah Sampson House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with the wealthy Sampson family, and, especially, for the exceptional quality of its Federal period architecture. The house thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Sampson House is the finest example of the Federal period style in Cotuit and one of the finest in the entire town. It isa full five bay, two story structure enclosed by a hip roof with monitor and twin interior chimneys. It is extended to the west by a two story, three bay ell. The house and ell are trimmed with corner quoins and a narrow cornice. Windows have simple surrounds with slightly projecting sills, and contain 6/6 sash. The fivebay facade is centered around a rather awkward entry with 3/4 side lights but no fan or porch to finish the design; it seems likely that a porch has been removed, a suposition substan- tiated by an early photograph that barely shows a typical, open, Federal period porch, obscurred by trees. The entry is surmounted by a three part window. The ell contains an entry with semi-circular fan.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Josiah Sampson (1753-1829) was a gentleman farmer who owned many acres of woodland and meadow. He married the daughter of Capt. Joseph Crocker who had a small house on this parcel in 1777. It is not known whether this house incorporates the earlier one or not. After Josiah's death, the estate passed to his son Josiah, Jr. and then to his grandson William at which time it was converted to a two family house. In the early 20th century Hiram Crocker ran a dairy farm here. He was the husband of Rebecca Sampson, granddaughter of Josiah, Jr. He used the meadow east of the river for pasture; that land is now developed with houses and a golf course. In the 1940's and 50's the house was used as a clubhouse and inn by Raymond Crawford.
In 1976 the mansion was restored as a single family home. During the 20th century, probably in the 1920's, an archaeological team from the Peabody Museum at Harvard, conducted an investigation of the property finding many artifacts.
