It is significant as a reflection of Barnstable's early agricultural history, and as an intact vernaculer example of a Georgian period half-Cape. The property thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This Cape Cod half house, story and a half, appears to have been built in the Georgian period. The small central chimney is off center almost in line with the front door which is on one end of the west facade. The house and window trim are plain. The windows were built up to the roof eave and are small pane 12/12. A small ell on the south gable end and a larger ell extending from the east facade were added later. The house has a low roof pitch and a low stone foundation. The door appears to have a plain four or five light transom.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Garretts Pond was named after Andrew Garrett who lived here and owned the property from 1809 to 1835. The first known owner was Joseph Blish. shore of Garrets Pond and was used by the owners and villagers for the annual washing of sheep from colonial times to the 1800s. The families that lived here raised livestock and farmed the property.
