It is significant as a social document reflecting the changing economic status of its known laborer/occupants, and as a well preserved example of a simple three bay, Federal cottage. The property thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHTIECHURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Benjamin Baker, Jr. House is a well-preserved example of a three bay, 1 1/2 story Federal period cottage. It is shingle clad, trimmed with simple cornerboards, and enclosed by a gable roof with offset stove chimney. The entry, whichis offset to the other side, is typically framed by pilasters and headed by a transom. Windows are simply framed and contain 6/6 sash.
HISTORICAL SIGNIPICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the comnunity. Benjamin Baker, Jr., caulker, purchased 1 1/2 acres of land on Hyannis Road (then called Baker's Lane) from John Baker, housewright, of Brewster in 1826 and 1827. The house was probably built shortly thereafter. The Baker family owned a great deal of land in this area, south of County Road, beginning with Nathaniel Baker who received the 28th lot in the third division of Common land. 3enjamin Baker died in 1840, an insolvent debtor, and Ebenezer Bacon was appointed :o receive his estate. Mr. Bacon immediately sold the property to John Monroe, é. 1t, Bacon toneditaceay) Elijah Lewis, Henry Crocker and William Lewis. This partnership held the property for'seven years before selling the property to Simeon Doane, Jr., Mariner.
Simeon resided there until his death in 1880, and upon his wife Eliza's death in 1890, the property was sold to John Young. It has changed hands several times since. The Baker family owned a great deal of land in this area, south of the County Road, beginning with Nathaniel Baker who received the 28th lot in the third division of Common Land. The Baker family were among the first settlers of this artery between Barnstable Village and Hyannis. Originally called Baker's Lane, this road linked the early prospering conmunity of Barnstable Village with the later developing seaport of Hyannis. Benjamin Baker died in 1840, an insolvent debtor, and Ebenezer Bacon was appointed to receive his estate. Mr.
Bacon immediately sold the property to John Monroe, Elijah Lewis, Henry Crocker,and William Lewis. This partnership held the property for seven years before selling the property to Simeon Doane, Jr., Mariner.
