Distance from and Frontage on Road 40' Name of Established District N/A Further Description of Important Features Well preserved Victorian house with all of the charac- teristic Italianate details such as a projecting bracketed cornice, a shallow hip roof, thin vertical windows with a slightly gabled window surround, narrow lap siding, corner boards, and a bracket porch roof supported on thin columns. The rear addition is much plainer and possibly earlier in date. History and Significance The structure's significance rests not only on the quality of its archi- tectural style but on the fact of its preservation along a major commercial street that has undergone several stages of renewal. (see reverse side) Description of Environment and Outbuildings The structure stands adjacent to a brick fire station and an abandoned fast-food restaurant along busy West 25th street.

Revision Date(s) 10/76 5-85 FEB 10 1987 Statement of Significance (continued) This building is a fine example of Italianate style architecture which survives in a good state of preservation. The Brooklyn Centre neighborhood contains three noteworthy examples of wood frame Italianate residential architecture, so this building form is quite rare. The Mallo House is the earliest example, with a documented date of 1857, although this date might refer to the rear section, as the main portion would seem to date from about 1880. The house has elaborate brackets, an ornate front entrance porch, segmental arched windows with wood hood moldings and on the interior fine woodwork, spacious rooms with high ceilings.
Surprisingly, there is no main open stairway; instead there is a side stairway which is quite steep, perhaps indicative of this building's original use as a farmhouse; farmhouses of this style generally seem not to have large open stairways. What is also remarkable about this house is that it enjoys a fairly spacious lot and has a good size carriage barn at the rear. It is the only house which survives on Pearl Road in Brooklyn Centre. Diebold Mallo is shown as the owner of this house and about 7 acres of land on the 1874 atlas. The outline of this house is clearly shown, and two outbuildings are indicated at the rear.
