Approach is by a private road and the property is surrounded by a fence and a gate.
The site was originally called Paul's Point since it was owned by a Paul Thorndike, and its strategic location was recognized as early as 1711 when a watch house was constructed, then a fort and finally, because of its isolation, a smallpox hospital. 14/6 LIGHTHOUSES OF MASSACHUSETTS - THEMATIC GROUP NOMINATION Lighthouse # 21 page 2 MAJOR ELEMENTS DESCRIPTION: The station dates primarily from 1871 and the extant original elements include the square brick tower, Stick Style Keeper's House, and standard brick oil house, as well as the slightly Tater 1875 equipment building. Twentieth century additions and alterations are the wood frame garage (1942), concrete walks, 48' flagpole and rather extensive modifications to the keeper's house (1968). Due to the alterations to the site, only the light tower is considered significant to this nomination.
Tower - Exterior: The brick pyramidal tower, painted white, has 5 windows containing 6/6 sash with granite sills and lintels. wood frame two panel door faces the dwelling. It is topped by a ten-sided lens room, the bottom half of which is iron with a simple square balcony railing. A standard iron dome with ventilator and lightning rod completes the tower. Stair: housed in a 3-square-foot central brick shaft with iron treads measuring 12 1/2" deep, 36 1/2" wide. The Tamp room is reached by a series of three steps leading to landings; this is repeated nine times. Windows: Five windows with wood frames and sashes. Granite sills and lintels measure 3' 5" X 8". Window casings are 3'3" wide, 4'3" high, with 3" sill and 3 1/2" skirting. Lamp Room: Entered through a wooden door; room contains a 2/2 glass window; this measures 3'2" X 6'3 1/2" wood sheathing.
Brick wall plain to 6'3 1/2" Floor covered with ; then a string of headers, abovewhich is an iron ceiling. Ceiling is composed of 6 iron segments; most of one is cut out to receive an iron trap Ladder, measur ing 6 1/2" deep X 21 1/2" wide, with 7 steps on upward slant to vertical grab bar painted grey. Ladderway is sheathed in vertical wooden boards. Lens Room: Ten-sided; alternate lower sections have intact vent wheels, painted grey over original brass. Lower iron sections are 3'5" high. Window panels measure 26 1/2" X 46 1/2". Balcony: Scuttle door protected by small hood. Square balcony 4' 1/2" at center, 7'5" on each side. Exterior slot of vent framed. Metal astragals hold glass. OIL HOUSE - standard design; partly hidden by foliage and isolated from complex.

Interesting cross gable with large supporting post/brackets, double windows_L1,2. Large, bland additions (1968) obscure both seaward elevations, seriously compromising the integrity of the house. John Glover was authorized to build the "J" shaped earthwork fort which still remains on the upper level of the property. 1801 - A hospital was erected for smal1pox victims, and the area acquired the name of Hospital Point. 4/2/1801 - Hasadiah Smithsold parcel of land to the town of Beverly for $50. 1812-14 The smal1pox hospital was converted to barracks.
1849 - The smallpox hospital burned to the ground. 1871 - The town of Beverly transfers land to the US Government (1.833 acres for $1428.57; no deed of record); temporary lighthouse erected. 1871-72 The present brick tower was erected for $4,600-$5,000; 14'7" diameter X 40' high. 1875 - The wood frame equipment building erected for $400; 15' X 23' x 20' 1927 - A rear range light was placed in the spire of the First Baptist Church on Cabot Street in Beverly's commercial district (NR, 1983). 1928 - Light was electrified. 1941 - Original keeper's house was alteredto provide barracks for twenty men. 1947 - The keeper's dwelling designated as quarters for the Commander of the First Coast Guard District. 1/31/86 Major additions and alterations to the keeper's dwelling; $22,159.35. 1976 - Fresnel lens replaced 1981 - Acrylic optic installed.

The station was established in 1871 when a small square brick tower was erected along with an oil house and an unusual Stick Style Keeper's House to aid in the approach to Salem Harbor. In 1927 it was supplemented by a rear range light which was placed in the spire of a local church. The light is a example of a secondary light and meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the state level as well as survey criteria la, 2a, 5b.
