Further Description of Important Features A two-story brick facade 100' long, with gambrel roof and pedimented dormers above.
A pedimented center piece with a one-story entrance porch. First story arched windows and second story windows with keystone lintels. Central roof cupola with slightly pointed dome. 3. History and Significance Founded by Mayor Carlos Jones of Brooklyn Village and his wife on their 40-acre farm in 1887 as a home for the "care, support and education of destitute children." Building erected 1902 for $25,000. Excellent example of Neo-clas.ic Revival architecture. Badgley a Cleveland architect active 1887-1916. (see reverse side) 4. Revision Date(s) 9/76 Statement of Significance (continued) The Jones Home is a rare and architecturally significant example of turn of the century institutional architecture. It was designed by prominent Cleveland architect Sidney R. Badgley who according to architectural historian Eric Johannesen "enjoyed a national reputation, having designed buildings all over Ohio and in many other states. A native of Canada, he was the architect of a number of Canadian buildings and also of the Methodist Church in Foochow, China." (from Cleveland Architecture 1896-1976, p. 52) Badgley specialized in church and college architecture. Another major building of his in Cleveland which still stands is the Pilgrim Congregational Church on West 14th at Starkweather.
The Jones Home is an inspired example of Neocollonial architecture, with an unusual gambrel roof crowned by a Colonial-inspired central cupola and featuring corner quoins and cornice modillions which reflect the Georgian influence. The building survives in good condition on a spacious lot. It was erected in 1903 as one of a number of turn-of-the-century institutional buildings in Cleveland. Many of its contemporaries, such as the Alta House, the Ursuline Convent, and historic hospital buildings, have been demolished. The Jones Home for Friendless Children was founded in 1886 by Carlos Jones, mayor of Brooklyn Village, and his wife on their 40-acre farm here. Among the founding trustees were Rutherford B. Hayes, ex-U.S. President, and Lewis Miller, Akron industrialist and founder of the Chautauqua movement.

It is my understanding that the property was determined eligible by the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office on 19 March 1987, but that Children's Services, at that time, formally objected to National Register status. I am writing to you to advise you that Children's Services, Inc. hereby removes its objection so that this Cleveland landmark building can gain National Register status.
The Ohio Historic Preservation Office has advised me that I need to send this notarized statement in order to have this objection lifted and the property listed. Children's Services is incorporated as a non-profit agency and as such is the sole owner of the Jones Home for Children. Since the site is still used to house emotionally disturbed children, it is our wish that the site not be listed at this time. As an agency, Children's Services maintains the building and grounds regularly to meet state and local standards. It is felt that this designation would act to limit our programming at this time.
