Lighthouse #43 page 1 of 6 Ten Pound Island Light SITE DESCRIPTION The light is located on a small island at the eastern end of Gloucester Harbor with shoals between it and the mainland to the east. It was used as guide by fishermen and vessels entering the harbor.
The light is on the southwest side of the island facing the USCG station. The Island is abandoned and is covered with low bushes, grasses and some oak trees. It has a rocky shore with some beach at the site of a former fish hatchery(not included in the nomination). The site of the lighthouse, which includes ruins of the old house and associated structures, still conveys its historic function as a lighthouse complex. Lighthouse #43 page 2 of 6 Ten Pound Island Light, Gloucester, Mass. MAJOR ELEMENTS DESCRIPTION The nomination includes the cast iron conical light house (1881). A skeletal day mark, oil house ruins (1821), and foundations at the southwest end of the island. TOWER: Exterior- This is a conical cast iron structure, 30' tall rising 44' above the water. The body is painted white and encircled by two narrow rings.
The ten sided lantern is solid below with ten large window openings above; two of these are blocked and several panes of glass are missing. It is enclosed by a standard iron roof with round ventilator and lightening rod. The balcony which separates the lantern from the body of the tower has original Italianate brackets and balcony. The top of the tower is painted black and is pierced by tour portholes. The entry is segmentally arched. Interior- The interior is brick lined and whitewashed. ck Tined a Stair: Iron spiral staircase with simple railing and no balusters; tweleve steps lead to the lamp room and a nine rung ladder provides access to the lens room. Lamp Room: Wooden ceiling with unusual portholes as skylights. Brick section open for trap door. Wooden storage cupboaras. Lens Room: The light has been removed.
The walls are painted white below with vertical unpainted sheathing above. There are five round openings with no covers for vents and a scuttle door entrance onto the balcony. The ceiling has ten cast iron sections with a vent hole in the center decorated with acanthus leaves and flutes Balcony: Original Italianate balustrade with turned balusters and simple flat rail. Supporting the balcony beneath the balusters are curved triangular cast iron brackets. Roof: Standard iron roof in ten sections with a round ventilation ball and lightening rod. *DWELLING: This remains in ruins only; brick foundation and concrete retaining wall on north side. *OIL HOUSE: This remains in ruins only; granite block walls do stand. All wooden trim and roof are missing. Wooden louvers in front and rear gables are intact.
*Further research may conclude that the oil house (1821) and the dwelling (possibly from the 1881 construction) and their surrounds possess historic archaeological potential. However, the information available at this time does not adequately support this conclusion. LIGHT CHARACTERISTICS: 1919- fixed light with flash 6 seconds- 5 seconds. 1923- light changed to 45 candle power. 1925- 720 candle power visible for 12 miles; order changed to forth order lens. 1925- intensity of light incresed to 1400 candle power; lens changed to fifth order. 1956- light moved to top of conical fog bell tower; same candle power; unwatched fog bell.
1966- 1400 candle power; 375mm lantern, 120v; 250w, C5 fil. 1976- R250mm condensing lens, 1.15lamp, daylight, color plastic, flasher 12vdc, lampchanger 12v-6PL, 1antern 250mm plastic lens; horn volume increased to two blasts/20 seconds. LEVEL OF SIGNIFIGANCE/RELATION TO NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA: The Ten Pound Island Light possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship as well as significant associations with the de velopment of aids to navigation in Massachusetts. Located near to the site of the original 1821 stone lighthouse tower, the present light, believed to date from 1881, is a well preserved example of the cast iron towers of the period and despite the decay of ancillary structures, remains an important location in the navigation of Gloucester Harbor.
It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places at the state level** as well as survey criteria le (tower only), 2a, 3a, 3b, and 4a. Although the lighthouse may also be significant at the local level, further research must be made to substantiate this. Lighthouse #43 page 6 of 6 Ten Pound Island Light, Gloucester, Mass. BOUNDARY JUSTIFICATION The boundaries of the Ten Pound Island Light include the light and remains of ancillary structures associated with the use of the site as a light station. The remains of a road serve as the northern boundary separating the lighthouse complex from the Fish Commission hatchery complex, which was established on the island in the 1880's and is not associated with the lighthouse complex. The boundaries to the east, west and south are the natural rocky coastline of the island.

Due to technical problems, Ten-Pound Light, owned by the City of Gloucester, was not included in that nomination. We have since secured additional information about the property that answers these technical concerns. The Massachusetts Historical Commission would therefore like to correct that omission by considering Ten-Pound Light as an amendment to the Lighthouses of Massachusetts Thematic Resource National Register nomination. Listing of the lighthouse in the National Register by September 1, 1988, could make the property eligible for Federal and State funds. The amendment will be considered at the next meeting of the Massachusetts Historical Commission, on June 8, 1988. Ordinarily, owners are informed of the Commission's intent to nominate properties 30 to 75 days prior to the meeting.
Enclosed is a copy of the letter of notification that would have been sent to the City of Gloucester as owner of the property. It includes an explanation of the rights of owners and an invitation to comment directly to the Massachusetts Historical Commission. However, because the 30 to 75 day notification period is passed, we ask that the City waive its right to comment. Your waiver will allow us to consider the nomination at the June commission meeting and then forward the nomination to the National Register office in Washington in time for National Register listing by September 1, Enclosed is a letter to Carol Shull, Keeper of the National Register, that waives your right to comment on the nomination directly to the Massachusetts Historical Commission. In order to waive that right, you should sign the letter as owner of the property and send it directly to Ms. Shull.

Iisted in the National Register, certain Federal investment tax credits for rehabilitation and other provisions may apply. Listing in the National Register does not mean that limitations will be placed on the property by the Federal government. Public visitation rights are not required of owners.
The Federal government will not attach restrictive covenants to the properties or seek to acquire them. In Massachusetts, properties nominated to the National Register are automatically listed on the State Register of Historic Places. There are no limitations, public visitation requirements, or restrictive covenants for private properties included in the State Register.
