Johnson Organizatian Quincy Historical Conmission Date June 14, 1986 / May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Timothy Reed House retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling, and association with prominent Quincy families who developed Adams Street as an area of residential estates in the latter half of the nineteenth century- The most elaborate Stick Style house in Quincy, the house fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 284 ADAMS STREET TIMOTHY REED HOUSE The house at 284 Adams Street appears to have been built by Timothy Reed in the late 1870s. Reed was a prosperous Boston leather merchant. Reed's family lived in the house until about 1915 at which point it was acquired by Walter E.
Burke inherited the property and is listed as the owner in 1930. Royden was the owner of Royden Burke Insurance, located in the Adams Building at 7 Temple Street in Quincy Center. Adams Street which was originally a section of the old Boston Plymouth Highway was established as Quincy's most exclusive residential area in Vassell-Adams House (1731; NR) is the only extant house from this early period. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 284 ADAMS STREET TIMOTHY REED HOUSE The Stick Style evolved out of the mid-19th century picturesque revival styles, in particular the Gothic Revival of Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852), and flourished in house pattern books of the 1860's and Characteristics include angularity, verticality, asymmetry and an emphasis on the wall surface as a decorative element. There are only a handful of Stick Style houses in Quincy. The residence at 284 Adams Street is the most elaborately articulated example. It is replete with Stick Style features: the steep roof complex.
the asymmetry of the massing, the contrast of void and solids, the projecting window hoods, the irregular fenestration and the walls which are articulated with clapboards contained within the usual indication of the major members of the structural frame. The dominant features are the clipped gables, with bargeboards framing recessed The elevations of the house are decorated with a string course consisting of vertical boards, contrasting with the horizontal clapboards. This motif is repeated at ground level, under the bracketed eaves. at the base of the gables and at the base of the large one-story bay window. The richly bracketed entrance porch is another fine Stick Style element. On the property to the rear of the house is surviving carriage house also with a complex roof hip roof; walls are articulated with scalloped shingles.
Its quiet massing and enveloping roof indicate that it was probably built a decade later during the Queen Anne period. carriage house is one of the few to remain on the large 19th century estates along Adams Street (contributing).
