Crane House retains integrity of location, design, materials, feeling, as well as association with the development of Quincy's affluent residential neighborhoods at the turn of the century.
The well detailed Colonial Revival-style house is characteristic of dwellings erected in the President's Hill neighborhood by local businessmen, civive leaders, and affluent Boston commuters. The building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 11 AVON WAY FRANK W. CRANE HOUSE This imposing house at 11 Avon Way was built by Frank W. Crane, and his wife, Jennie M., about 1902. The Cranes remained in residence through the 1930s. Frank W. Crane was a partner in F.H. Crane and Sons. dealers, in hay. grain and flour. With offices at the corner of Saville and Hancock Streets, Crane had a short walk to work. Crane's family business which later included the selling of home heating oil. was still in existence in the 1950s.
This house is located in the President's Hill section of the President's Hill/Cranch Hill neighborhood of Quincy. This area. immediately adjacent to Quincy Center. is roughly bounded by the MBTA tracks (east); Granite Street and Quarry Streets (south); Carrolls Lane. Adams Street (north); and Quarry Street (west). President's Hill was developed as an elite residential area for affluent Quincy businessmen, civic leaders. and Boston commuters upon the division of the Charles Francis Adams Estate in the 1890s. The property was divided into three contiguous real estate trusts called President's Hill. President's Hill Annex, and Cranch Hill. its name from the Adams family who furnished two United States Presidents.
The close proximity of the Quincy Depot (which served the Old Colony Railroad and the Street Railway) and of Quincy Center were crucial factors in the successful development of President's Hill between the 1890s and the late 1930s. CRANE HOUSE This Colonial Revival residence is an attractive example of the style. and one of the best-preserved of the many Colonial Revival houses built on President's Hill in the early twentieth century.
-Its symmetrical three-bay facade is dominated by a central portico and a full-width The Georgian details are particularly fine; they include the vase shaped balusters of the porch and portico, the double Doric columns and the urn shaped finials. Ihe door was modeled after a Federal example with its elliptical fanlight and long sidelights. The house is set on a granite foundation, as is the porch, and has a steep pitch hip roof punctuated by hip dormers. a configuration typical of the 1900s. Framing the facade are, corner pilasters and a wide cornice board both features reminiscent of Greek Revival houses. This house is a copy. but rather an imaginative interpretation of classic regional architecture.
