Johnson Organization Quincy Historical Commission DateJuly 1, 1986/ May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Wollaston Fire Station is associated with municipal improvements undertaken in Quincy in the late 19th century in response to the City's expanding residential neighborhoods. A well preserved example of Italianate design, the Fire Station retains integrity of design, location, setting, materials, feeling and association and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 111 BEALE STREET WOLLASTON FIRE STATION The rapid growth of Quincy in the late-19th century demanded the construction of several large neighborhood fire stations. Built to replace outmoded wooden structures in Atlantic. Quincy Center, and Wollaston, the Wollaston Station is the only one from this period to survive. Constructed in 1900, the station replaced an earlier building that was moved to Hough's Neck in 1886. Ihe Wollaston fire station is still in active use. + The history of fire protection in Quincy began in 1644 when all townspeople were ordered to have a ladder leaning up against their chimneys. In 1792, just after Quincy became a town. the "Quincy Fire Society" was formed among the inhabitants for the mutual protection of property in case of fire. 1812, Quincy acguired a hand pump, its first major piece of fire apparatus.
The first act to establish a Fire Department in Quincy was accepted at the Town Meeting in 1854. The $3800 purchase of a steam pump, a house for its shelter, and piping the streets was approved at town meeting in 1878. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 111 BEALE STREET WOLLASTON FIRE STATION The Wollaston Fire Station is a fine example the Italianate style applied to a public building. Built in 1900, the building is the - Bationgo sulne oldest extant fire station in Quincy. Sited on the edge of a hill. the fire station has a granite foundation and basement with brick at the first and second story levels.
Basically rectangular in plan, with a slate hip roof, the structure is dominated by a tall square The tower is replete with Italianate details: a low pitch pyramidal tile roof. an arched arcade and windows, and corbelling under the eaves and atop the two recessed brick panels of the walls. The station's roof is is pierced by one tall chimney and hipped dormers. The fenestration of the main block is composed of large regularly spaced arched windows on the ground floor and smaller rectangular windows on the second floor; the levels are divided by a granite string course. Originally the first floor door openings on the Beale Street facade were arched; in:1957 rectangular entry doors replaced these openings to accomodate new firetrucks. The alteration has not compromised the building's architectural integrity.
