HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 155 BEALE STREET WOLLASTON UNITARIAN CHURCH (now St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church) In 1887, a group of Wollaston citizens not wishing to travel to the First Parish Church (1828, NR) in Quincy Square, began to convene a Unitarian congregation in Wollaston. By 1890 the group had organized legally and in 1890 a committee was hired to raise funds to build a church. Erected the same year, the church construction was part of the development of the Wollaston Heights neighborhood in the late-19th century.
It was preceded by the building of two earlier neighborhood churches, the first Baptist Churcr of Wollaston, on Prospect Avenue (1873, # WH-543)* and the Methodist Church on Beale Street (now demolished). Serving the Wollaston community for over fifty years, the Wollaston Unitarian Church merged with the United First Parish Church in Quincy Square in 1960. The Wollaston church was purchased by St. Catherine's Church of the South Shore and was dedicated as such in 1962. Catherine's Greek Orthodox) Wollaston Unitarian Church is a well-preserved example of Shingle Style architecture applied to an ecclestiastical form. It is the only intact Shingle Style church in Quincy. style is reflected in the horizontal massing. multiple gables, irregular fenestration, and use of two walling materials, shingle on the second floor and rough granite blocks on the first level. A low sloping gabied slate roof emphasizes the horizontality of the square granite tower and an arched window set within a projecting shingled gable. The section west of the main gable houses a parish house added to the church in 1915. A wrought iron fence, erected after 1938, surrounds the property (noncontributing).
