White Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 101 BILLINGS STREET CHARLES E. WHITE HOUSE The house at 101 Billings Road was built about 1905 by Charles E. White, a traveling salesman. By 1923, the new owner was Fred A. Bartlett, M.D. This house is typical of the comfortable suburban residences erected in North Quincy neighborhoods at the turn of the century.
103 Billings Road was built on what had been the large adjoining farms owned by Caleb Billings and John Alfred Billings until the land was subdivided tsi the Tane was susd, vided in the 1890s. Known as "Atlantic," this neighborhood was subdivivded by developers encouraged by the easy access to Boston provided by the Old Colony Railroad (1845) and the street railway (1888). As in the adjacent neighborhoods of Wollaston. Norfolk Downs, and Montclair, much of the residential building construction occurred in Atlantic during the first two decades of the 20th century. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 101 BILLINGS STREET CHARLES E. WHITE HOUSE The house at 101 Billings Road is one of the best-preserved of a handful of late Shingle Style residences built in North Quincy neighborhoods in the early 20th century. The sidehall plan house is set on a granite foundation and has a cross gabled-roof. The house exhibits may of the characteristics of the Shingle Style, in particular the recessed gable window, set within curving shingles, and the presence of the picturesque oriel window. The house has retained its architectural integrity and identity as a fine example of an early twentieth century Shingle Style house. A 1920s garage at the rear of the property is noncontributing.
