Its construction was a direct consequence of Quincy's population expansion of the 1920's. The building retains integrity of design, materials, location, workmanship, and association, and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - 36 BUTLER ROAD DOROTHY Q APARTMENTS In response to Quincy's tremendous population growth in the 1920s, several brick apartment buildings were erected on residential streets near Quincy Center. apartment house at 40 Butler Road was constructed in 1929 at a cost of $150,000. The "Dorothy O" takes its name from the Quincy Homestead. or Dorothy Quincy House (1706; NR) located next door at 34 Butler Road. The three-story. 34-unit apartment building was built by William G. Shaw, owner of the prosperous W.G . Shaw Furniture Company located (in 1922) in the Hancock Building in Quincy Square.

Apartment building is the finest of several brick apartment buildings designed by Boston architects Graves and Eppes in Unlike the domestic scale and residential appearance of the mulit-family buildings erected in the 19th century, apartment buildings of the 1920s were relatively institutional in The five-story "Dorothy Q" building is composed of two rectangular blocks connected at one end with a courtyard between The building's blocky massing is relieved by elegant Georgian These include the quoins at the corners of the main block, the keystones over each window and the modillioned The focal point of the design is the central entrance topped by a bracketed doorhood and parapet above which rests a pedimented marble plaque reading "Dorothy Q." A path to the rear section of the building is marked by a low brick wall and two square granite columns topped with an urn and a finial.
