The building possesses integrity of design, location, materials, setting, feeling, and association with Quincy's population expansion and school building campaign of the early twentieth century.
The Coddington School fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 26-44 CODDINGTON STREET CODDINGTON SCHOOL The Coddington School is the best example of a Colonial Revival school building in Quincy. Designed by prominent Boston architect, Charles A. Brigham. the three-story red brick structure is rectangular in plan although the composite hip roof gives the building a squarish The primary facade is dominated by a hip roofed pavilion projecting slightly from the main block. This section consists of five window bays with pairs of six-over-six rectangular windows at the first and second story levels and arched windows on the third floor.
third floor lunette windows act as the continuation of the second floor rectangular windows, giving the facade a semblance of grandeur with an economy of ornamental elements. This particular detail, the use of arched window on the top floor, is seen in later Quincy school buildings now mostly altered. The central entrance is framed within a granite arch and topped by a bracketed balcony. Further subtle detailing in the Coddington School is seen in the use of modillions the eaves, granite string courses, and the central entrance framed within a granite arch and topped by a bracketed balcony. As partner with John Hubbard Sturgis (from 1866-1888), Charles A. Brigham (1841-1925) was involved with the construction of the Museum of Fine Arts (1876) and the Stoughton Railroad Station (1887). HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 26-44 CODDINGTON STREET CODDINGTON SCHOOL The construction of the Coddington School in 1909 was a direct consequence of the tremendous growth in Quincy's population during the 19th and early 20th centurles. An unprecedented school building campaign was launched in the 1890s and continued through the 1920s. The Coddington School is one of the few from this period that has not undergone alterations. Built for the children living near Quincy Center, the current structure replaced an earlier Coddington School built in 1855.
The original school was moved 100 feet to make way for the present structure and subsequently demolished. The Coddington School and Coddington School are in honor of William Coddington, Quincy's earliest benefactor. Coddington was treasurer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and a magistrate. In the wake of the Antimonian Controversery, he followed Anne Hutchinson and other religious liberals to Rhode Island and left his land for the support of public schools. He later the first governor and a president of the Rhode - Island Colony. Since the early 1960s, Coddington School has been used as Quincy Junior College. The college was chartered as part of the Quincy Public School system in 1958.
