Johnson Organization Quincy Historical Commission Date July 1, 1986/ May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA SIATEMENT (if applicable) The EbenezerHersey House is one of a few well-preserved examples of a modest 1½-story, Greek Revival-style residence that was quite common in Quincy in the mid-nineteenth century. The house retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling, and association, and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 57 CODDINGTON STREET EBENEZER HERSEY HOUSE This modest one-and-a-half story, Greek Revival style, side hallplan house is typical of those built near Quincy Center and in South and West Quincy in the mid-1800s. Set on a granite foundation, it has a characteristic facade composed of a closed pediment and a recessed side entrance with two windows to the side.
The compact rectangular massing is emphasized by the wrap-around plain cornice board under the eaves and corners articulated by Doric pilasters. -The entrance has a simple flat entablature and side lights to the floor. A one-story rear addition was present by 1876. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 57 CODDINGTON STREET EBENEZER HERSEY HOUSE This small Greek Revival cottage was built by Ebenezer B. Hersey. a painter, in 1843. Hersey bought the land which included the present 51 and 57 Coâdington Street, from Seth Spear and his wife Elizabeth in 1842.
The Spears owned a large farm in the area and this was the back of their property. After 1912, the Hersey property passed first to the Home Associates then to Walter H. Dunbar in 1920. The house at 57 Coddington is one in a small enclave of cottages and farmhouses that survive on Coddington and Spear Streets, most of these buildings have been altered .
