ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 114 COLUMBIA STREET BARNICOAT GRANITE WORKS (now, Hancock Monuments) The former S.H. Barnicoat Granite Works is one of the few late-19th century granite works to survive and to remain in active use in Quincy. Arranged to face a central derrick, the one-and-one half L-shaped frame building has a low sloping gable roof. The structure is composed of a series of work stations each with its own small windows and entrances opening out to the yard. The irregular surface of the roof and fluctuations in the eave line indicate the various work spaces within. A small gable-roafed office is attached to the building's west end.
Over ninety feet tall, and stabilized by six two-inch thick guy wires, the derrick at the present HancockMonument Company is used to handle the granite to be cut, dressed, and stored. The present derrick is not original, noncontributing The interior of the granite sheds is of great interest to the industrial archaeologist: while the shop uses modern heavy-duty moters and carbide tools, much of the original technology exists, including the blacksmith's station. Before the days of carbide tools, one blacksmith serviced about 6 sheds a day. Of further interest are the giant pulleys and rollers to handle the granite, the sand-blast room where the granite is incised, and the giant suction hoses at every station to carry away the harmful granite dust.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 114 COLUMBIA STREET BARNICOAT GRANITE WORKS The S.H. Barnicoat Granite Works (now Hancock Monuments) is an important intact reminder of Quincy's flourishing granite industry in the late-19th century. The late 1860s saw new techniques in polishing stone which in turn spurred the growth of granite working, polishing. and tool and machine shops predominantly in South and West Quincy. Typical of the granite works in operation at the time, the well-known S.H. Barnicoat granite works was established in 1890 by S. Henry Barnicoat.
arrived in Quincy in 1888, worked for his Fred at his granite works nearby. Henry established his own business on Centre and Columbia streets and ran it from 1890 until his death in 1898. Reorganized as the Columbia Granite Company, the granite works wàs purchased by John McQueen and Richard Gordon in 1900. The present owners, the Hancock Monument Company have been on the premises for at least forty years.
