McIntire House is a well-preserved example of the Shingle Style, which retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling, and association with the development of Quincy's affluent residential neighborhoods at the turn of the century.
The house is characteristic of the dwellings erected in the President's Hill neighborhood by local businessmen, civic leaders, and affluent Boston commuters, and thus fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued belaw. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 55 DIXWELL AVENUE HERMAN W. MCINTIRE HOUSE Herman F. Mcintire, a Quincy realtor, built both 55 and 21 Dixwell McIntire started out living in the house at Number 55 and then moved by 1909 to Number 21. Mclntire had a short walk to his office in the Greenleaf Building in Quincy Center. The Molntires retained ownership of the house at 55 Dixwell Avenue until the early 1920s. 1922, Walter A. Read. chief draftsman of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Limited and his wife Alice G. were the new owners.
This house is located in the President's Hill section of the President's Hiil/Cranch Hill neighborhood of Quincy. This area, immediately adjacent to Quincy Center, is roughly bounded by the MBTA tracks (east); Granite Street and Quarry Streets (south); Carrolls Lane, Adams Street (north); and Quarry Street (west). President's Hill was developed as an elite residential area for affluent Quincy businessmen, civic leaders, and Boston commuters upon the division of the Charles Francis Adams Estate in the 1890s. The property was divided into three contiguous real estate trusts called President's Hill, President's Hill Annex, and Cranch Hill. President's Hill took its name from the Adams family who furnished two United States Presidents.
The close proximity of the Quincy Depot (which served the Old Colony Railroad and the street railway) and of Quincy Center were crucial factors in the successful development of President's Hill between the 1890s and the late 1930s. MCINTIRE HOUSE The residence at 55 Dixwell Avenue is a fine example of the Shingle Style characterized by the dominating presence story gambreled of the shingled two gables which envelop the house.
Other details of the period include classic elements such as the Palladian windows, the oriel window with keystones and the Ionic columns supporting the balustraded wrap-around porch; all these features are elements of the emerging Colonial Revival Style. With its ,tall chimney rising above the gambrel roofs, a picturesque ridge-roof dormer and the overhang of the second floor over the house exhibits most of the elements of a late Shingle Style residence. A 1950s garage at the rear of the lot is noncontributing.
