Form No: 22 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 249 EAST SQUANTUM STREET GLOVER HOUSE The Glover House is important historically as one of the few reminders of Quincy's earliest settlement as a region of large farms. John Glover, a wealthy puritan purchased the Newbury grant of 400 acres in the mid 18th century. The house was built in 1798 by Elisha or Ebenezer Glover or by Benjamin Wadsworth Glover (1774-1815), father of long-time owner Horatio N. Glover (1801-1862). The Glovers retained ownership of this house for over 280 years.
The house is in a section of North Quincy (now known as the Atlantic neighborhood) . This was part of Dorchester until 1792. Originally, the Glover farm included the territory of what is now the North Quincy neighborhoods of Atlantic and Montclair. Form No: 22 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 249 EAST SQUANTUM STREET GLOVER HOUSE The vernacular example of a Federal period farmhouse, at 249 East Squantum, is significant architecturally as one of the few Federal houses in Quincy which has not undergone damaging changes to its exterior. ot.
the roor over the gablee) This residence has the archetypal compact rectangular massing of a late Federal style structure (noted by the slight overhang of the roof over the gables), a large centrally placed chimney, a five- bay symmetrical facade, and a low granite foundation. Another indication of its 18th century date is the placement of the second floor windows tight under the eaves. Before 1888, the owners added a two-story wing to the rear and a Greek Revival style portico across the front of the house and another on the side. A Greek Revival entrance framed by fluted pilasters and sidelights to the floor it is topped by a flat entablature with rosettes at each end.
