MARTIN NOWLAND HOUSE This handsome bungalow at 31 Edgemere Road was built by J. Martin Nowland, at a cost of $4,000 in 1915. Nowland was an attorney and one of the developers of Edgemere Road. He built and owned several houses. Edgemere Road is one of several streets east of Quincy Center that were developed as an early twentieth century residential neighborhood. Single family houses , built of wood in the Colonial Revival and Bungalow styles characterize the area. In partnership with William P. Thompson, Nowland had his offices in the Adams Building at 1364 Hancock Street. By 1926, the ownership of 31 Edgemere Road had passed to John D. Buckingham, a music teacher at the nearby Woodward Institute.

MARTIN NOWLAND HOUSE The Craftsman style bungalow at 31 Edgemere is the best of several similar versions of this type found in Quincy neighborhoods developed in the nineteen teens and twenties. Numerous Craftsman elements are found in this house, in particular its broad low proportions, the wide overhang of the roof lines, the look of exposed framing material in the front gable, the short thick columns supporting the overhang and the use of stucco for walling material.
The side elevation has a finely detailed Craftsman type oriel window with anoverhanging wood roof and a wood base. The bands of windows in the porch below the front gable and in the dormer are Praire style details which gave the house a look of modernity in 1915 when it was built. A one car garage, built in 1926, is located at the rear of the property (noncontributing).
