Johnson Organizatian Quincy Historical Commission Date June 19, 1986 / May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Fore River Clubhouse is a fine vernacular example of a Shingle Style recreational building that retains integrtiy of design, location, materials, setting, feeling, and is associated with the the dominance of the shipbuilding industry in Quincy during the World War One era.
The building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - FOLLET AND BEECHWOOD STREETS FORE RIVER CLUB HOUSE The Fore River Clubhouse was built in 1917 by the Fore River Shipbuilding division of Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation for use as a educational and recreational center for its employees. The largest single employer in Quincy at the time, the Fore River Company hoped that the "the club would encourage healthful exercises and be an indication that interests of workmen are considered..." (words of William Orr, President of the Board of Directors as quoted in the Quincy Patriot Ledger, January 24, 1917, p.2. The Clubhouse originally housed a ballroom, bowling alleys, and a billiard It was acquired by the City of Quincy in 1925. It is presently utilized as a general community center with some offices for the Parks Department on the second floor.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- FOLLETT AND BEECHWOOD STREETS FORE RIVER CLUB HOUSE The long configuration of the Fore River Club House, facing the water and enveloped by a low ridge roof, is reminiscent of the Shingle Style houses built along the New England coast in the late-19th century. buidling was designed by Gerald Schaefer. The red wooden structure, a long one-and-a-half story building with a wide cross gable, has a roof punctuated with rectilinear eyebrow dormers on the water side, and similar larger windows on the street side. clipped gable which is pierced by a large exterior granite block chimney.
A small one-story flat-roofed addition at the junction of the cross gable and the main section was added in the 1930's and does not seriously disrupt the architectural integrity of the structure.
