Moved two blocks from its original site, the house is one of a few well-preserved examples of a modest vernacular residence that incorporates Gothic Revival and Greek Revival styles. The house fulfills Criteria A and C and meets exception B of the National Register of Historic Places. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 279 FRANKLIN STREET THOMAS CURTIS HOUSE The house at 279 Franklin Street has important historical associations with the development of Quincy's shoe industry. Thomas Curtis, a boot and shoe manufacturer was the builder of this house built in 1851. house was orginally located at the site of 265 Franklin Street but moved to the plot at 279 Franklin Street by Herbert Curtis in 1915. Thomas Curtis was the owner of Thomas Curtis and Company, a boot and shoe factory active in the mie-19th century. Family members in the firm included Thomas, Benjamin, Benjamin F.. and Noah.
The making of boots and shoes was Quincy's main industry in the 1850s. shoe manufacturing had evolved from a cottage industry (begun in the late 18th century) to a centralized operation performed in one workshop. Thomas Curtis was the son of Noah Curtis, a pioneer in Quincy's boot and shoe business, whose house stands at 313 Franklin Street (ca. 1795; #345) . ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 279 FRANKLIN STREET THOMAS CURTIS HOUSE This cottage is one of Quincy's few intact examples of a typical carpenter-built residence incorporating details from several contemporaneous 19th century styles.
The basic five-bay rectangular form from the 18th century is turned with its gable end to the street; details from various styles are applied to this house. The steep pitch of the gable and the bargeboards on the eave are borrowed from the Gothic Revival mode; the arched gable window is an Italianate element. Ihe long windows on the ground floor of the gable elevation, the corner Pllasters, and the simple window enframements indicate the influence of the Greek Revival style. The one-story rear addition was added in the 1920s and is in keeping with the architectural characater of the main block. A garage at the rear of the property (1930s) is noncontributing.
