HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 199 GRANITE STREET SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH Salem Lutheran Church is associated with the Scandanavian immigrants who arrived in Quincy in the late 19th century to work in the granite industry in West Quincy.
In 1889, a small group organized the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Salem Church. Early meetings of the entirely Swedish parish were held in the chapel of Christ Church on Quincy Avenue (1874, # 293) and later in Plummer's Hall on Hancock Street. By 1891, the membership was growing at such an encouraging rate that the congregation decided to purchase the ledge of rock on Granite Street for a church now known as "Church on the Rock." Church historians recall that the men of the congregation set to work with their own hands and quarried stones from the West Quincy quarries to build the church. Over the entrance to the tower are the abbreviations: "Sv. Ev. Luth. Salem Kyrka." The church was dedicated in 1894.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 199 GRANITE STREET SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH The Salem Lutheran Church is one of Quincy's two best Gothic Revival granite churches built in the 19th century (the other example is the 1874 Christ Church, #293). The church is prominently sited high on a granite ledge. The rough granite block building has a simple gable-roofed traditional plan with a square frontal tower. Granite steps lead to the pointed arched entrance in the tower flanked by two lancet arch windows. Lancet arch windows also line the walls of the rectangular nave.
Further embellishments of the tower are an open belfry composed of pointed arches, a balustrade and spandrels decorated with trefoils, pinacles at the corner, and a polychromatic slate roof on the octagonal wooden spire. In 1914, the chapel addition was built on the right rear section of the original church. The chapel continues the use of granite walls and lancet window openings; two large gabled dormers pierce its roof creating a fine picturesque ensemble.
