The house is one of three well-preserved Capes built in Quincy prior to 1850, and it fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 429 GRANITE STREET SOLOMON NIGHTENGALE HOUSE This house was built by Solomon Nightengale in about 1820. The Nightengales settled this area of Southwest Quincy in the 18th century. The family had several farms in the vicinity of this house. property descended through the family and remained in Nightengale ownership until the 1920s when the owner was John Lehto, a carpenter.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - 429 GRANITE STREET SOLOMON NIGHTENGALE HOUSE This fine historic residence at 429 Granite Street was built as a three quarter cape. Its main facade consists of an entrance, two windows on one side and one window on the other side. The portico is composed of two baseless fluted Doric columns supporting a pedimented roof; pilasters frame the sidelights filled with plain stained glass set in leaded frames. A one-story rear ell was added by 1888. Granite posts at the end of the driveway were probably added in the late 19th century (contributing).
