BARKER HOUSE Number 74 Greenleaf Street was built by George A. Barker in the late 1870s. George Barker was one of the three sons of Henry Barker founder of Henry Barker and Sons, granite father's firm. huincy and Lanesv, Wie Maesachuse t8. The house was still in the Barker family in 1923. Henry Barker firm was one of the largest in Quincy with quarries at one of tho largoat in auino George was a partner in his The Henry Barker, Senior, one of the leaders of Quincy's granite industry in the mid 19th century. played a key role in the development and promotion of small paving blocks used In the late 1860s, the firm manufactured the country's first granite sawing machines which made possible the easy productionof table tops, mantels, and other decorative pieces. Barker lived at 87 Greenleaf Street surrounded by his sons (partners in the firm). George A. at number 74 Greenleaf. Henry F.
at number 103 Greenleaf (1871, #QC-203) and William P. at #86 Greenleaf. (#87 has subsequently been demolished. #86 has been altered). Greenleaf Street, which was laid out in the mid 19th century, had been the Peter Butler estate. The Butlers were owners of the Quincy Homestead at 34 Butler Road (1706, NR). A large section of the estate passed to the Greenleaf family and Dr. Ebenezer Woodward in the mid 19th century. BARKER HOUSE Although a few twentieth century apartment buildings have intruded. Greenleaf Street comprises a fine enclave of late 19th century residences designed in the varied styles of the period. The Stick Style is represented by two houses, an early version at 74 Greenleaf Street and a later version at 125 Greenleaf which has been altered. The house at 74. Greenleaf Street is one of two well-preserved elaborate Stick Style houses in Quincy; the other example is 284 Adams Street (ca. 1870s: #85) .
The salient characteristics of the style are exposed stick-work suggesting the frame within, angular trim, an irregular silhouette, diagonal braces, overhanging eaves with brackets and patterned boards under the This house contains all these rich details under a steep double hip slate roof pierced by shed dormers and one large chimney. The front and side porches with are also embellished with Stick Style ornamentation. There is a handsome granite wall around the Greenleaf and Putnam Street sides of the property that dates from the turnof the century (contributing). A two-car garage at the rear of the lot was built in 1927 and is noncontirbuting.
