Barker House, among the most elaborate examples of the Italianate style in Quincy, retains integrity of design, location, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association with the development of Quincy's granite industry in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The house fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Form No: QC-219 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 103 GREENLEAF STREET HENRY F. BARKER HOUSE Number 103 Greenleaf Street was built by Henry F. Barker in 1871. Henry F. Barker was one of the three sons of Henry Barker founder of Henry Barker and Sons, granite dealers. Henry F. was a partner in his father's firm. The house remained in the Barker family until the early 1900s; in 1907 the house was owned by William H. Abercrombie, occupation unknown. In 1923, James A. Ring was the owner. The Henry Barker firm was one of the largest in Quincy with quarries at Quincy and Lanesville Massachusetts.
Henry Barker, Senior, one of the leaders of Quincy's granite industry in the mid-19th century, played a key role in the development and promotion of small paving blocks used in Philadelphia. New York, and Boston. In the late 1860s, the firm manufactured the country's first granite sawing machines which made possible the easy production of table tops, mantels, and other decorative pieces. his sons Barker lived at 87 Greenleaf Street surrounded5t. (partners in the firm), George A. at number 74 Greenleaf (1871; # QC-213). passed to the Greenleaf family and Dr. Ebenezer Woodward in the mid 19th century. The Greenleafs from which the street takes its name. were one of Quincy's best known families in the 19th century. A prominent member was Thomas Greenleaf, founder of the Quincy Savings Bank in 1845, Special Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Norfolk County, and Chairman of the Supervisors of the Temple and School Fund. Greenleaf Street comprises a fine enclave of late 19th century residences designed in the varied styles of the period. 103 Greenleaaf Street is the most intact example of the Italianate style on the street. It is also one of two elaborate Italianate houses left in Quincy (the other is at 270 Adams Street, ca. 1860; #84). This house is a compound L-shaped residence replete with a variety of Italianate characteristics. These include bracketed bay windows, roundheaded windows under the eaves, and a dentiled cornice with elaborate double brackets. The corner porch is supported by chamfered posts and ornamented with a low balustrade. A low granite wall bullt at the turn of the century lines the perimeter of the lot (contributing).
