HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 853 HANCOCK STREET JOHN C. CHAMBERLIN HOUSE This large Queen Anne house was built by John C. Chamberlin, a hardware commercial traveler, about 1880. In 1904 the house was sold to James H. Penniman, the son of prominent James T. Pennimanm, a well-known scrap leather merchant in Boston. - The Pennimans also owned an inner sole manufacturing shop in Quincy which in 1899 employed about 30 persons. The next owners in 1915 were the Deanes, owners of A.M.
Deane and Company, granite cutters who specialized in memorials. By 1937, the house had been sold to Winfield L. Strout. The Strout family operated a restaurant out of the house (first "Rendez-vous" and then the "Winfield" until the summer of 1987). Development of this area of Wollaston as a residential area followed arrival of the Old Colony Railroad in 1845 and the street railway in 1888. The house is the only well-preserved example of several substantial suburban houses that once stood along Hancock Street in the late 19th century. CHAMBERLIN HOUSE This grand house, prominently sited at the intersection of Hancock Street and the Southern Artery, is one of Quincy's most exuberant examples of the Queen Anne style. The dominant element in the house's angled facade is the onion dome atop the center section, an unusual motif in Quincy. Further characteristics include the varied shapes of the windows and typical Queen Anne windows with small square lights surrounding a plain pane, the complex roof. the overhanging bracket of the gable, and the fine porch at the intersection of the two wings of the house. Turned posts and solid brackets with a raised fan motif embellish this porch. small one-story frame addition on the west rear elevation was added in the mid-20th century when the house became a restaurant.
An original barn stands at the rear of the property (contributing); a 1930s diner stands at the front of the site (noncontributing). The house is a significant component in the Hancock Street streetscape contrasting pleasantly with the commercial character of its surroundings.
