Johnson Organization Quincy Historical Cormission Date June 8, 1986 / May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Dating from the 1920s, a period of significant conmercial and institutional expansion in Quincy Center, the Elks Building is among Quincy's best examples of Colonial Revival architecture adopted for an institutional building. Designed by J.
William Beal and Sons, active architects in Quincy during this period, the E1ks Building retains integrity of design, location, feeling, and association, and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Form No: QC-155 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 1218 HANCOCK STREET ELKS BUILDING The Quincy Masssachusetts Lodge No. 943 B.P.O.E. building at 1218 Hancock Street was erected just two decades after a committee of prominent Quincy citizens held several informal meetings and discussed the need for an Elks Lodge from a benevolent and social standpoint. The first organizational meeting was held in 1904 in Grand Army Hall on Hancock Street and in February of 1905, the Lodge was formally instituted. After meeting in a succession of different halls, the dedication of the Elks First Home on Foster Street took place in 1907.
The jurisdiction of the Quincy Lodge in 1924 included the following places south of Boston: Milton, Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset, Hull, Sciuate, Randolph, Holbrook and Rockland. Part of the redevelopment of Quincy Center in the 1920s, the Masonic Temple is one of several buildings erected on Hancock Street during the decade. Substantial two and three story commercial and institutional structures replaced frame stores, houses and taverns demolished after Hancock Street was widened in the mid-nineteen teens. William Beal and Sons, the Colonial Revival style Elks Building is one of Quincy's most elaborate and best preserved private institutional structures. It is a three-story brick structure, rectangualr in plan, with a five-bay facade. Limestone faced storefronts flank the central recessed entrance framed by Doric columns and topped by a wrought iron balcony. The second floor is composed of four arched windows with wooden fan motifs, and a Palladian ed windone with wadon window in the center. The third floor had five pairs of double sash small paned windows, under a modillioned cornice, over which rests a brick parapet broken by five sections of wooden balustrade. 1985-86 renovation of the Elks Building, storefronts were restored to their original appearance and a third floor was extended to the rear of the building. Windows along both north and south elevations were replaced.
These changes have not detracted from the building's architectural integrity. Architects J. William Beal and Sons were active in Quincy during the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. Previous to the Elks Building, the firm designed the Adams Building (1880-85; 1889-90; NR). They would design the Masonic Temple (1926; #QC-152), Bethany Congregational Church (1927;#QC-252), and the Granite Trust Company Bank (1929; #QC-171).
