Quincy's best example of the Classical Revival style applied to a cormercial structure, the building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 1370-74 HANCOCK STREET QUINCY SAVINGS BANK In addition to the Adams Building (1880-85; 1889-90; NR) next door, the Quincy Savings Bank is one of the two well-preserved buildings in Quincy Square erected as part of the commerical expansion of the late 19th century. Built in 1897, the building at 1372 Hancock Street was the fourth home of the Quincy Savings Bank which was first establishedin1845. Its founder and first president was Thomas Greenleaf. Representative to the General Court (1808-1819) and town moderator for many years. Quincy's second bank (the first was the Granite Trust Company.
established in 1836), the Quincy Savings Bank was originally located in Josiah Brigham's store on Hancock Ten years later, in 1854, the bank was sufficiently prosperous to move to the offices of the Quincy Stone Bank at the corner of Hancock and A third move took place in 1871 when the bank moved into its own building, a small wooden structure, on Granite Street. Finally, in 1897 the bank's prosperity allowed the building of this impressive building at 1372 Hancock Street. This building continued as the bank's main office until 1974 when a new structure was completed at 1200 Hancock Street. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 1370-74 HANCOCK STREET QUINCY SAVINGS BANK The 1897 Quincy Savings Bank building, prominently located at the edge of Quincy Square, is one of a few intact pre-twentieth century commercial buildings in Quincy Center. Revival structure in the city. - eity. cono fou-9tor) It is the finest Classical The four-story brick building, with a symmetrical five-bay facade, is ornamented with large granite quoins articulating the corners, a modillioned granite cornice, and double windows topped with granite keystone lintels. The focus of architectural design is the classic central entrance with a pedimented portico.
The double Doric columns are made of polished granite; the modillioned pediment is set over an entablature consisting of a banded architrave, and a frieze with the raised letters, "Quincy Savings Bank Building." The one-story 1919 addition, to the right of the main block, repeats the design of the 1897 buiding and is compatible. Although the original windows and storefront enframements were replaced with anodized aluminum in the 1970s, the storefronts retain their original configuration.
