HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 1400 HANCOCK STREET GRANITE TRUST COMPANY (now South Shore Bank) The Granite Trust Company (now known as the South Shore Bank) which erected this building in 1929, had its roots in 1836 when its predecessor, the Quincy Stone Bank was established. The first commercial bank in the community, it was also the first in the United States to capitalize through public subscription of its stock. This notable institution grew slowly, and it was not until 1865 that it took a national charter and became the national granite bank. In 1912, prior to World War I, the bank broadened its field of activity and became the Granite Trust Company. Beginning in World War I and continuing through World War II, extraordianary leadership was provided for the bank by Theophilus King and his son Delcevare [the Baxter-King House is at 270 Adams Street].
In 1929, Theophilus King supervised the erection of the impressive granite tower at 1400 Hancock Street. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - 1400 HANCOCK STREET SOUTH SHORE BANK The 1929 Granite Trust Company bank building is a fine example of Art Deco office tower. It is Quincy's only "skyscraper." local landmark, the building is prominently sited at a major intersection on the edge of Quincy Square. The limestone structure is vertically oriented; its central section is composed of graduated vertical blocks rising eight. nine, and ten stories.
Three-story sections on either side of the main block act as a base and frame. Storefronts are faced in polished granite. A recessed entrance is marked by four two-story square granite columns supporting a granite entablature which reads "Granite Trust Company" (now covered by the South Shore Bank sign). Subtle ornamentation is in low relief and subjugated to the building's shape; its piers end abruptly devoid of capitals or cornices. Changes to several storefronts are contained within the original granite enframements and do not compromise the building's architectural integrity. J. William Beal and Sons were active in Quincy during the late 19th century, and particularly in the 1920s. Other buildings designed by the firm include the Adams Building (1880-85; 1889-90; NR), the Elks Building (1924; #QC-151).
