Johnson Organization Quincy Historical Commission Date July 1, 1986/ May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 25 High School Avenue is among Quincy's few well-preserved examples of a modest one-and-a-half story, Greek Revival-style residence quite conmon in the mid-nineteenth century. The house retains integrity of materials, design, location, and feeling, and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 25 HIGH SCHOOL AVENUE This well-maintained house, just off busy Quincy Avenue, was probably built in the 1850s for David W. Perry (occupation unknown), who was the owner in 1876. The Perry family retained the house until it was sold in the late nineteen teens to Edward J. Desmond, a blacksmith.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 25 HIGH SCHOOL AVENUE This house is an archetypal Greek Revival one-and-a-half story cottage with a sidehall plan. Characteristic details include the closed pediment, the corner pilasters articulating the corners and the stylized pediments over the windows. The door has sidelights to the floor and is framed by flat pilasters and a stylized pediment. The house is set on a typical Quincy granite foundation and is sheathed in clapboards.
Once a residence, now a dentist's office, the house has survived recylcing with grace; the side wing added in century and the 20th century roof dormer do not detract from the building's integrity or identity. Although many cottages of this type were built in Quincy in the the mid-19th century, this one is significant as one of the best-preserved in the city.
