Setting This is one of the newest houses on Highland Avenue, a street in Wollaston Heights devloped in the 1880s and 1890s. Richards House is among the most elaborate of several similar, well-detailed examples of the Colonial Revival style built in Quincy during this period. Designed by a locally-known architect, the house retains integrity of design, materials, location, feeling, and association. The house meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

RICHARDS HOUSE This house was built in 1923 for Alfred H. Richards the vice-president of the Wollaston Cooperative Bank (established in 1889). As one of the few houses built in the 1920s in the neighborhood, 354 * saborhood, 98 Highland represents the last wave of substantial residential building construction in Wollaston Heights. This house is located in Wollaston Heights, a neighborhood of substantial suburban houses built during the last three decades of the 19th century. Defined as the section of Wollaston located on Wollaston Hill. the Wollaston Heights neighborhood is roughly bounded by Beale Street (north); South Central Avenue (south); Newport Avenue and the MBIA tracks (east); and South Central Avenue (west). The neighborhood was part of a 300 acre tract of farmland purchased by the Wollaston Land Associates in 1869.
The Associates marketed Wollaston Heights as a status residential community for affluent Quincy businessmen and Boston commuters. Key to the success of the development was the easy access to the railroad which, by the 1860s, had opened a station at Beale and Newport Street. In an arrangement negotiated by George Pinkham, business manager for the developers, the Old Colony Railroad issued free passes good for three years to anyone purchasing a house lot from the Wollaston Land Associates. Rapid building construction ensued with the majority of houses in the neighborhood built by 1900. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 354 HIGHLAND AVENUE ALFRED H. RICHARDS HOUSE Architect designed, as were several houses built by prominent Quincy citizens in the 1920s and 1930s, this large residence is an archetypal example of a Colonial Revival house of the 1920s. The house is a traditional rectangular structure with a symmetrical five-bay facade. central pedimented portico, dormers and slightly recessed wings. Classical details include the dentils and modillions under the eaves. gablortalee ndweth centudopted prnor gable-roofed dormer windows with balustrades over each wing. The proportions are closer to 18th century models than most of the late Adopted primarily for the small one-and two-family residences erected in modest north Quincy neighborhoods, this typical Colonial Revival format is here expressed on a larger scale.
A frame garage is located at the rear of the property (noncontributing). As one of the few houses built the 1920s in the neighborhood itaepresents the last wave oi suburban bullding construction on wollaston Hil1. Boston architect William Chapman designed the house. Chapman was well known in Quincy having previoulsy designed several public buildings and residences. Included in this nomination is the Wollaston Branch Library (1922; #489).
