HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 355 HIGHLAND AVENUE FRANK BURGESS HOUSE Frank Burgess, owner of Boston Gear Works, built this house in 1913. Boston Gear Works, one of the world's largest manufacturers of gears for machinery, was brought to Quincy by Frank Burgess (1860-1929). Burgess purchased the company (established in 1877) from its founder, George B. Grant in 1891 and moved it from Boston to Norfolk Downs. Burgess was the creative innovator of the company and a pioneer in gear standardization.
Boston Gear Works, one of Quincy's metal industry employers in the early 20th century, is still in operation as a division of IncomeInternational although its buildings have been substantially altered. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 355 HIGHLAND AVENUE FRANK BURGESS HOUSE This architect-designed house high on Wollaston Hill exemplifies the experimentation with contemporary "Prairie School" and Craftsman Bungalow styles common in the nineteen teens. The house is fairly unusual for Quincy where the majority of houses built during this period were executed in variations of the Colonial Revival style.
The house has a rectangular plan with a hip roof and a central entrance. Prairie School features include the low pitched hipped tile roof. dormers, grouped double-hung sash windows and stucco walls. The open rafter portico at the entrance is derived from Craftsman Bungalow architecture. An original garage has been altered (noncontributing).
