The house retains integrity of design, location materials, feeling, and association, and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 17 MARSH STREET EDWIN MARSH HOUSE Number 17 Marsh Street was built for Edwin Wilson Marsh in 1851. He was the grandson of Wilson Marsh whose coach lace business operated out of the federal period house (now sided) at the corner of Marsh and Quarry Street from 1797 to 1837. The Edwin Marsh House remained in the Marsh family over seventy years. In the 1920s. the house was conveyed to the Frances M. Emery family (Frances W. Emery was Marsh's wife). The house is located in a neighborhood of modest residences built between 1850 and 1890 in southwest Quincy.
Associated with the expansion of the granite industry, this neighborhood developed during the latter half of the 19th century. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 17 MARSH STREET EDWIN MARSH HOUSE During the mid-19th century, in Quincy, numerous workers cottages were constructed in vernacular versions of the style of the day. Many of these houses were one and-a-half story capes with applied decorative ornament, most frequently derived from the Greek Revival style. The Edwin A. Marsh house is one of a few well-preserved examples of this trend in Quincy.
The simple five-bay gable-roofed house is embellished with Greek Revival details. These include the bold pilasters at the corners and the wide gable returns. The door enframent, composed of a row of brackets, is a later Italianate addition probably of the 1860s or 1870s. by 1876.
