A well-preserved example of Classical Revival architecture adopted for a commercial struature, the building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 10 MERRYMOUNT ROAD NEW ENGLAND TELEPHONE In response to rapid residential development. Quincy's first public utilities emerged in the late 19th century. The New England Telephone building on Merrymount Road, constructed about 1906, was the first building erected specifically to house the telephone exchange. Telephone service in Quincy was originalluy provided by the Suburban Telephone Company in the early 1880s. The city's first exchange was located in the Whicher Block (now the site of the Quincy Patriot Ledger building); by 1888 it occupied two rooms in the Durgin and Merrill Block.
By the time the telephone exchange moved into the building on Merrymount Road, it was operated by New England Telephone. Service was provided to customers in Quincy, Holbrook, Randolph, Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset, and Hull. New England Telephone stayed in the building until 1940 when new headquarters were built at 1070 Hancock Street. In 1943, the old building was recycled into a Jewish Community Center and is now occupied by Autism Resources Incorporated. 1906) is a well-preserved example of simple Classical Revival architecture adopted for a semi-public commercial building. In a community where the majority of industrial and commercial structures have undergone unsympathetic alteration, the New England Telephone building has maintained its architectural integrity despite a major addition in 1924. The 1924 alteration doubled the size of the original building but copied the circa 1906 design scheme. The five-bay section west of the entrance is the original building. The building retains its 1924 appearance. The symmetrical ten-bay facade is composed of an arched central entrance flanked by regularly spaced recessed rectangular windows ornamented with brick keystones and cast stone sills. Of particular note is the building's fine brick work.
Brick pilasters on the east and west elevations separate the walls into four units; a brick string course above the second floor windows is topped by a frieze of recessed brick capped with a cornice. These subtle details endow the building with architectural integrity and make it a fine example of twentieth century commercial architecture.
