INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET MASSACHUSETTS HISTORI CAL CAMMISSION Office of the Secretary, Boston Conmumity : QUINCY Form No: 243 Property Name: Edward Miller House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. 1989 AUG HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 36 MILLER STILE ROAD EDWARD MILLER HOUSE Edward Miller, major in the Revolutionary War, and grandson of Reverand Ebenezer Miller (first Rector of Christ Church), built this house in the early 1830s. In 1873, Edward's nephew, George T. Bigelow obtained ownership. The Bigelow family used the house as a summer residence through the end of the 19th century. By 1908, Dr. William Everett, the headmaster of Adams Academy, owned the property. In 1912, Henry Munroe Faxon, president of the National Mount Wollaston Bank and successful real estate developer, purchased the Miller House.

decided to restore the main house as the Miller Stile Inn and commissioned Boston architects Frank and Albert H. Wright and landscape architect H. J. Kellaway to design a development plan which eventually included seven cottages (88,94, 100, 106, 112 Elm Street, 44 Bigelow, 32 Miller Stile Road) on land adjacent to the main house. The Inn remained a hotel until after World War II when it became a roominghouse. In 1960, the South Shore Chamber of Commerce purchased the property. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 36 MILLER STILE ROAD EDWARD MILLER HOUSE The Miller-Everett House has retained its identity as a Federal period mansion in spite of its recycling into an Inn in 1912 and into offices for the South Shore Chamber of Commerce in 1960. H enti ia cgr ce 182 houet is a two-and-a-half story five-bay hip-roofed block. Its main elevation faces the Town Brook. This facade is dominated by a fine columnar full-width porch. The central archetypal Federal entrance features an elliptical fanlight over the door with sidelights with tracery to dado level. The details delicate finely articulated. the columns and attenuated. the first floor windows are the ground advantage of the view. Miller-Stile Road facade has a central entrance topped by a fanlight and protected by a two column portico. The large two story wing on the north end of the in the late 1890s.

The house currently shares its site with two buildings erected circa 1912 as part of the Miller-Stile Inn development. These are not related to the Federal period of significance and therefore are excluded from the boundaries for this property which includef the house and the land 10 feet from each side of the structure.
