Johnson Organization Quincy Historical Commission Date July 1, 1986/May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) A well-preserved example of the Shingle Style applied to a multiple-family dwelling, 1-7 Moscow Street is the finest building of its type in Quincy. The building retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling, and association with Quincy's rapid residential development in the late nineteenth century.
The building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 1-7 MOSCOW STREET 1-7 Moscow Street, one of Quincy's early apartment buildings, appeared as part of the city's rapid residential development at the turn of the century. In comparison to streetcar suburbs closer to Boston, Somerville and Dorchester for example, relatively few apartment buildings were erected in Quincy. Of those that were built, the majority of these new multiple-family residences were constructed in the newly subdivided neighborhoods of North Quincy (Atlantic, Montclair, Norfolk Downs, and Wollaston). Located in Atlantic, conveniently near the railway on Hancock Street, the turn of the century apartment building on Moscow Street was owned by William E. Harmon, trustee in 1907. Originally built to accomodate four families, the owners in 1923 were Fanny B. Strickland and Mary E.
Whitney, neither from Quincy. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 1-7 MOSCOW STREET Early apartment buildings in Quincy, erected in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries, were generally built of wood and adopted popular architectural styles used for single family homes. Here, at 1-7 Moscow Street, the best example of this building type in Quincy, the Shingle Style was the mode selected.
The long two-and-a-half story frame hipped roof apartment block exhibits typical elements of the Shingle These include the two dominant gambrel gables on the main facade; the building's compact massing; and the decorated treatment of the shingles at the top of the eaves and at the flared juction of the wall with the eaves. The gables' bracketed overhangs act as the roofs for the two recessed double entrances.
