Among the most elaborately detailed and best preserved of the Italianate residences built in Quincy's suburban developments of the late nineteenth century, the house fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Form No: 576 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 183 PINE STREET BARNES HOUSE The house at thelimmediate area. Ihe nouse appears to have been bullt by H. Watson Brassee, a salesman in the 1870s. In 1895 the property was sold to Sophia Barnes. The Barnes family, whose business in Boston was musical instruments, remained in residence until after 1930. Located just north of Beale Street, the house is in a section of Wollaston that was trosd, Che nouso is mn a part of the area subdivided by the Wollaston Land Associates in the 1870s. The houses erected in this section of suburban development were generally less than elaborate than those built at Wollaston Heights.
Residents commuted to Boston on the Old Colony Railroad leavingfrom Wollaston Depot at Beale and Hancock Streets. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - 183 PINE STREET BARNES HOUSE Che house at 183 Pine Street is one of two well preserved two-and-ahal: story sidehali Plan Itallanate houses in Quincy (the other example 1 at 248 President's Lane, #PH-77). ane, tie-77ack Salient featur Salient features of the style seen in this house are the double brackets under the eaves, the round headed window in the gable, the projecting window lintels, supported by small brackets, and the paneled bay window on the front and side elevations.
Although a second story window on the main facade has been filled in with clapboards, and a dormer added on the east elevation, these changes do not significantly detract from the building's integrity. The house is one of a handful of 19th century houses that retains its carriage house. The original gable-roofed carriage house has a flared roof cupola and is unaltered except for the replacement of clapboards (contributing).
