Among the best preserved of the substantial Colonial Revival houses on President's Hill, the house fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 95 PRESIDENT'S LANE CLARENCE BURGIN HOUSE The house at 95 President's Lane was built for Clarence Burgin, secretary and eventual President of the Quincy Savings Bank (established 1845). He was also the father of Thomas Burgin, Mayor of Quincy (1935-1942 and 1950-51) for whom Upland Road was renamed the Thomas S. Burgin Parkway. The Burgins were in residence until about 1915 when the property was acquired by Albert H. Crafts, a wholesale shoe dealer in Boston. The new owner in 1927 was Ralph Tirrell, another Boston leather dealer; the Tirrells remained in residence until after 1940.
This house is located in the President's Hill section of the President's Hill/Cranch Hill neighborhood of Quincy. This area, immediately adjacent to Quincy Center, is roughly bounded by the MBTA (east); Granite Street and Quarry Streets (south); Carrolls Lane, Adams Street (north); and Quarry Street (west). President's Hill developed as an elite residential area for affluent Quincy businessmen, civic leaders, and Boston commuters upon the division of the Charles Francis Adams Estate in the 1890s. The property was divided into three contiguous real estate trusts called President's Hill. President's Hill Annex, and Cranch Hill. President's Hill took name from the Adams family who furnished two United States Presidents.
The close proximity of the Quincy Depot (which served the Old Colony Railroad and the street railway) and of Quincy Center were crucial factors in the successful development of President's Hill between the 1890s and the late 1930s. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 95 PRESIDENT'S LANE CLARENCE BURGIN HOUSE The Clarence Burgin residence, at 95 President's Lane, is the finest example of a gambrel-roofed Colonial Revival style residence in Quincy, and one of the best preserved of the many large Colonial Revival houses on President's Hill.
The two-and-a-half story frame building is dominated by the gambrel roof and the gambrel gable on the main three bay facade. A balustraded porch supported by Doric columns runs the full width of the first story. The central pedimented entrance is framed by pilasters. Other classically derived elements include the broken Roman pediment over the triple window in the front gable, dentils and modillions under the eaves, and pilasters at the corners of the main facade. A two car garage is at the rear of the property (noncontributing).
