HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 105 PRESIDENT'S LANE MORTON T. SWALLOW This impressively sited Colonial Revival house was built in 1915 by Morton T. Swallow, occupation until after 1930. Pie Rose Toratol yo ERe proiner Swallow remained in residence is located in the President's Hill section of the President's Hill/Cranch Hill neighborhood of Quincy. This area, immediately adjacent to Quincy Center, is roughly bounded by the MBTA tracks (east); Granite Street and Quarry Streets (south); Carrolls Lane, Adams Street (north); and Quarry Street (west).

President's Hill was developed as an elite residential area for affluent Quincy businessmen, civic leaders, and Boston commuters upon the division of the Francis Adams Estate in the 1890s. The property was divided into three contiguous real estate trusts called President's Hill, President's Hill Annex, and Cranch Hill. President's Hill took its name from the Adams family who furnished two United States Presidents. The close proximity of the Quincy Depot (which served the Old Colony Railroad and the Street Railway) and of Quincy Center were crucial factors in the successful development of President's Hill between the 1890s and the late 1930s.

Form No: PH-73 lane ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - 105 PRESIDENT'S LANE MORTON T. SWALLOW HOUSE This house, similar to several built in this version of the Colonial Revival style in Quincy, is one of the best examples that has survived without severe alterations. At 105 Presdient's Lane, the basic rectangular hip-roofed house of the Federal period is imitated yet greatly enlarged and embellished with Georgian and Federal period ornament freely interpreted and adapted. The five-bay facade is converted to a three-bay form.

Borrowed classical features include the pedimented dormer and balustrade on the roof, the elliptical fanlight in the central bay window, and the Palladian window in the rear facade. The house is among the most imaginative of the intact collection of Colonial Revival houses, built on President's Hill. A two-car garage. built in the 1930s, is at the rear of the property (noncontributing).
