HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 23-25 PROUT STREET The two-family house at 23-25 Prout Street is associated with the granite industry and the development of workers housing in Quincy during the late 19th century. as part of his small subdivision developed in the 1870s and 1880s. Clarke built this house, and others like it, on property that had been known in the late 18th century as Bass' Common. Clarke was a leading investor in the granite industry during the last quarter of the 19th century. One of the incorporators of the Quincy Quarry Railroad Company, a railroad connecting the quarries in West Quincy (1895) was also director of the V.P. Lyons Granite Company and Prout Brothers Granite Company. In the 1870s Prout Street and portions of Smith, Garfield, Dean and Clark streets were platted by Clarke; houses were erected in the 1880s for workers in the nearby guarries.
Clarke rented this house to workers about whom little is known. In 1907. Clarke sold the property to Theophilus King, another wealthy investor. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - 23-25 PROUT STREET The house at 23-25 Prout Street is one of the finest intact examples of the "Quincy Cottage" in Quincy. So-named, by the Massachusetts Historical Commission survey team, because of its presence in large numbers in Quincy, the Quincy Cottage is a one-and-a-half story gable roofed rectangular block with a projecting central entrance and twin roof dormers.
The dormers, which pierce the lower slope of the roof and the eave line, are the characteristic feature of the style. possible model for this house type appeared in the late 19th century pattern book Villages and Farm Cottages, by Cleaveland and Backus (1856). Typical stylistic variations of the Quincy Cottage form are found in the Baxter Street district. The choice of stucco or clapboards, the dormer type, and the appearance of details such as Italianate brackets, Stick Style paneling or a porch distinguish each house from its neighbors. The house at 23-25 Prout Street has shed-roofed dormers and richly articulated walls decorated with saw-toothed shingles and clapboards. Greek Revival style pilasters frame the main block and brackets support the eaves.
