Forn No: 205 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 109 PUTNAM STREET NEWCOMB PLACE The house at 109 Putnam Street is one of the oldest houses in this residential neighborhood adjacent to Quincy Center. The area in which 109 Putnam Street is located was once part of the Edmund Quincy farm which consisted of a mansion house. still located at 34 Butler Road (Quincy Homestead, NR), and over 200 acres. The property passed out of the Quincy family in the 1760s and after several subsequent owners was purchased in 1856 by Ebenezer Woodward. The house at 109 Putnam Street was on the property when Woodward bought the land. In 1857 Woodward sold the house to Ann Francis Fowle who married Joseph W. Newcomb, a painter. The house was known as "Newcomb Place" until 1895 when William P. Barker acquired the property. Barker was a partner in Henry Barker and Sons one of Quincy's leading granite businesses.
In 1906, Edna B. Follet, a clerk in Boston, purchased the property. The Follet family remained in residence through the early 1940s. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 109 PUTNAM STREET NEWCOMB PLACE The house at 109 Putnam Street is the finest intact two-and-a half story sidehall plan Greek Revival style residence in Quincy. The three bay facade has a closed pediment, side entrance and regularly placed six-over-six windows with simple lintels. The narrow cornice board is wrapped around the house and plain posts articulate the corners.
The glass entrance, supported by thin columns, and the one-story bay window, on the side elevation, were added in the 1930s and are sympathetic to the house's classic architecture. A simple gambrel-roofed wing addition is attached at the rear of the main house; constructed in 1965, it too retains proportions and details that do not detract from the integrity of the Greek Revival house. A picket fence runs across the front of the property (noncontributing). A shed at the rear of the lot is noncontributing.
