It is a well-executed example of the transition from the Greek Revival to the Gothic Revival styles in a vernacular form of the period. The house fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 24 QUINCY STREET This house was built in the 1850s probably for Thomas J. Nightengale, a carpenter who passed the house on to his son Jerimiah Nightengale, a farmer, after 1876. Charles Thaxter, a chauffeur, was the owner by . Ta ohautreut 1907. In 1923 the house was owned by Elphege Messier, identified as a clerk in City directories. Quincy Street was formerly known as Quincy Place. In 1851 the street had eleven houses and little development took place until after 1870 when workers, chiefly in the granite business, settled this neighborhood of Southwest Quincy.
Many of the new residents were Scandanavian immigrants who worked in the nearby quarries. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 24 QUINCY STREET This house represents transitional architectural tastes; it is a blend of the Greek Revival and Gothic Revival styles seen frequently in workers cottages built in South and West Quincy during the mid-19th century. The one-and-a-half story dwelling at 24 Quincy Street is one of the few such houses to survive without severe alterations.
The basic five-bay gable-roofed form is embellished with Gothic Revival features such as the steeply-pitched dormers and pointed arched windows under the end gables. Greek Revival style elements include the strong pilasters at the corners, the wide frieze board under the eave and the entrance framed by narrow sidelights and topped by a plain entablature. The house is set on a granite foundation and has granite steps leading to the entrance. A garage at the rear of the property was built in the twentieth century (noncontributing).
