Form No: QC-266 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 59-61 SPEAR STREET HARDWICK HOUSE The house at 59-61 Spear Street was probably built in the 1850s by Franklin Hardwick (1827-1901). Hardwick was the owner from 1857 until 1897 except for a period in the 1870s when the property was owned by his brother, Charles Henry Hardwick. The brothers were partners in C.H. Hardwick and Company, granite contractors, whose Quincy address was "Hardwick Wharf. Canal Street." The firm also had offices in Boston. The property remained in the Hardwick family until 1907 when it was purchased by Carrie Bigelow.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 59-61 SPEAR STREET HARDWICK HOUSE This well-preserved Greek Revival house is one of the largest of its type in Quincy, and one of the best of the style. Massed longitudinally, it has the configuration of a Federal house but all the salient characteristics of the Greek Revival style. They included the prominent banded cornice board wrapped around the house. closed-end gables, corner pilasters, stylized pediments over the ground floor windows, and an entrance capped with a plain flat entablature. door has full length side lights.
The house is sheathed in clapboards and is set on a typical Quincy granite foundation. Fronting the residence is a granite retaining wall with granite posts dating from the latter half of the 19th century (contributing). A frame garage (1920s) is located at the rear of the property (noncontributing).
