LENNON HOUSE This Queen Anne style cottage was built circa 1888 for Edward J. Lennon, an inspector for the Board of Health. The Lennon family retained the property until after 1923. The building is located on what had been known in the 1600s as Captain's Plain. which later belonged to the Adams Family. Before the death of Charles Francis Adams in 1889, his heirs formed the Adams Real Estate Trust and the land was subdivided into streets and residental lots including this area around Taber and Liberty streets and the park across from the house known as Liberty Square. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 53 TABER STREET EDWARD J. LENNON HOUSE The house at 53 Taber Street is an archetypal example of a Queen Anne cottage. It is the best preserved of two identical houses that face each other on Liberty Square in Southwest Quincy. A prototype appeared in pattern books of the day such as Edmunds V. Gillon. Jr.'s Early Illustrations and View of American Architecture, figure 225, page 36. The 1llustration shows the same gable-end facade with decorative truss work on the projecting end of the roof line, the gable filled with varied shaped shingles, and a front porch supported by thin turned posts and small decorative brackets. Although several such houses were built in Quincy during the latter half ofthe nineteenth century. the house at 53 Taber Street is the only one to retain all of its original decorative detail.
