An elaborately detailed example of a vernacular version of the Second Empire style, the house fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 50 UNION STREET SOLON DOGGETT HOUSE Number 50 Union Street was built by Henry G. Pratt in 1872 but sold the same year to Solon Dogget, a Quincy artist and author of several books of poetry. In 1910 the property was sold by William White, proprietor of W. B. White and Son which manufactured leather speciality goods nearby at 41 Baxter Street. Under the terms of White's will, the property passed to Carl W. Weixler, president of W.B. White and Son.
In 1926, Weixler sold the property of Joseph Pompeo, a "pedlar." ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 50 UNION STREET SOLON DOGGET HOUSE At 50 Union Street the basic one-and-a-half story Second Empire style house is embellished with decorative details from other picturesque styles. Characteristic of the Second Empire style, the house has a mansard roof supported by brackets and punctuated by dormers. clapboard walls are finished with patterned shingles below the windows; Stick Style brackets support the door hoods and stick-work adorns the base of the bay window. Added in the 1880s, two Queen Anne porches.
afd d in the 18808 one on the east elevation and one of the west elevation, are supported by turned posts and ornamented with a spindle frieze, corner brackets and a raised panel design of a radiating sun. On the east elevation a section of the roof appears to have acted as a base for a tower.
