Quincy's best-preserved example of a frame church in the Gothic Revival style, the First Baptist Church is associated with the development of Wollaston Heights and fulfills Criteria A and C and exception A of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 187 WARREN AVENUE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF WOLLASTON The Baptist denomination began in Quincy when eleven Baptists in Quincy Point established the First Baptist Church of Quincy in 1867. Several years later, in 1871, a group of twenty-three people living in the newly settled area of Wollaston Hill met in the Warren Avenue home of Mr. and Mrs.
George Pinkham and organized "The First Baptist Church of Wollaston Heights," name that was later changed to "The First Baptist Church of Wollaston." The cornerstone of the First Baptist Church of Wollaston Heights was laid in July 1872 and the church, with a seating capacity of 350, was dedicated in January of 1873. The new $15,000 structure was one of the first buildings to be erected in Wollaston Heights, a 100 acre development of large suburban residences begun in 1870. The church is sited on land given by the Wollaston Land Associates. George Pinkham, a community leader and one of the church's founders, was the business manager for the Wollaston Land Associates.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 187 WARREN AVENUE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF WOLLASTON The 1873 First Baptist Church of Wollaston is a fine example of Gothic Revival design and the finest intact frame church in Quincy. Although the building was greatly enlarged by additions in 1890, 1913, and 1956, the church has kept its architectural integrity due to the sensitivity of the architects responsible for the alterations. The original building is now the middle section of the structure. The 1873 building has a slate gable roof, an offset tower topped by a pinnacled spire.
and is decorated with small spur buttresses, label moldings, and narrow cusped lancet windows. A tall lancet window decorates the main gable. In the 1913 addition (which incorporates the chapel added in 1890) Boston architect. Albert Hayden Wright, repeated these design features. Wright's cross gabled addition exhibits the same buttresses and a similar window treatment as the original buiding. The two structures are joined by a Gothic arch colonnade. A one-story addition (1956) on the building's north elevation clearly reads as a separate unit and thus does not detract from the church's architectural integrity.
